Director, scriptwriter, producer



Born in 1949 in Moscow. In 1971 graduated from the Moscow State University, in 1980 he finished the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters & Film Directors (class of G.Danelia, M.Lvovsky and L.Golubkina). Author of scripts for many features, documentaries and TV series. Debuted as a director in 1990 with the film “Taxi Blues” which won the Special Prize for the Best Directing at the Cannes IFF. His next feature “Luna Park” also competed at the Cannes IFF and got Nika Award. The film “Wedding” (2000) received the prize for the best cast at the Cannes IFF. “Roots” (2005) got award for the best film as well as two other awards at Russian film festival “Kinotavr”. Laureate of 6 Nika and Golden Eagle awards for “The Island” (2006) as well as of numerous other prizes. People’s Artist of Russia, Cavalier of the Order of Friendship. Laureate of the national prize “Russian of the Year”. His filmography also includes “Line of Life” (1996), “Tycoon” (2002), “White Lilacs” (2007), “Tsar” (2009), “The Conductor” (2012), “The Queen of Spades” (2016), “Esau”, “Leaving Afghanistan” (2019), etc. Director, scriptwriter and producer of film “Vasilisa and the Queen of Likes” (in post-production).
