New Perspectives for the Film Industry
In 2024, Russia assumed the chairmanship of BRICS, and the XXII International Film Debut Festival "Spirit of Fire", held March 23–26 in Khanty-Mansiysk, opens a series of cultural events under this chairmanship.
BRICS countries are distinguished by their unique and distinctive cultures; many of them have highly developed film industries. The presence of filmmakers with such diverse experience and creative approaches at the festival provides truly unique opportunities for cultural exchange and cooperation.
For two decades, the "Spirit of Fire" has been a launching pad for future film stars, upholding the principle of mutual discovery: guests and participants from around the world discovered the ethnic diversity, rich traditions, and polyphony of Yugra, while Yugra audiences in turn learned firsthand about the life and culture of other countries.
Films from BRICS countries have repeatedly made their mark in the festival’s competition program, and in 2023, prizes in the international competition went to films from Iran, India, and China. The highlight of the business program, first presented at the "Spirit of Fire" last year, was the "cinema dialogues" between Russia and India, as well as Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
This year, in the international competition, we will see new works by directors from BRICS countries, appreciate fresh creative approaches rooted in cultural identity, and gain inspiration for new creative projects—both Russian and international.
The business program "The Special Language of National Cinematography of BRICS Countries" will serve as a space for international dialogue. Industry experts and public figures will discuss opportunities for co-production, educational and cultural initiatives, cinema distribution development, and film promotion in international markets.
The participation of BRICS countries in the "Spirit of Fire" marks the beginning of a great new journey in cinema, which resonates deeply with the very idea of our film debut festival.
