Born in 1949 in Moscow. In 1971 he graduated from the Department of Mathematical and Applied Linguistics of Moscow State University, in 1980 - Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors (workshop of G. Daneliya, M. Lvovsky and L. Golubkina).
Screenwriter of a number of feature and documentary films, as well as television series. In 1990 he made his debut as a director with the film «Taxi Blues», which received the award for best director at the Cannes IFF. His next film «Luna Park» (1992) also participated in the Cannes Film Festival competition and received the Nika Award for Best Music.
His film «The Wedding» (2000) was awarded the prize for best acting ensemble in Cannes. The film «Poor Relatives» (2005) won 3 Kinotavr awards, including the main prize of the festival. «The Island» (2006) was awarded 6 Nika awards, Golden Eagle and many other awards.
People's Artist of Russia, Cavalier of the Order of Friendship. Laureate of the national award «Russian of the Year». Among his directorial works are also «Line of Life» (1996), «Oligarch» (2002), «Lilac Branch» (2007), «Tsar» (2009), «The Conductor» (2012), «Queen of Spades» (2016), «Esau», «Brotherhood» (2019), etc. Currently, as a director, screenwriter and producer, he is working on the film «Vasilisa and the Queen of Likes».
