Born in 1974. In 1998 he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Tomsk State University, in 2004 – the directing department of VGIK (Vadim Abdrashitov's workshop).
His first feature film "Kremen" (2007) received the award for best debut and the Grigory Gorin Prize for best screenplay at the Kinotavr Open Russian Film Festival, the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Prize at the Mannheim Film Festival and the award for best feature film at the Stalker IFF in Moscow.
The director's second feature film, "Bubny, baraban" (2009), won two awards at the Locarno IFF (Silver Leopard for Best Director and Grand Prix of the Jury), the Best Director Award and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Cottbus IFF, the Golden Eagle Award for Best Actress and many other awards.
His next film, "Konvoy" (2012), received the main prize and the award for best director at the Sakhalin Screen IFF. The film "Dueliant" (2016) received three Nika and Golden Eagle film awards each, as well as a number of other awards.
