The president of the “Spirit of Fire” Emir Kusturica is currently working on three film adaptations of Russian literature. The KARO cinema chain organizes the free screenings in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Krasnodar. The Governor of Ugra Natalia Komarova held the meeting of the Organizing Committee of the 22nd Spirit of Fire International Debut Film Festival. Every year the “Spirit of Fire” presents a retrospective program of films by great Russian directors and filmmakers. The name of this year’s retrospective protaganist is not well-known to the general public, and how wrong is that: Pyotr Chardynin (1873-1934) was the most popular, prolific and, in contemporary terms, the top-selling director of pre-revolutionary Russian cinema. His name is associated with the transition of cinema from the first experiments to a real industry and art form in our country.  Like the majority of filmmakers of that time, Pyotr Chardynin multitasked as a director, scriptwriter, cameraman and actor. An actor by training, a student of Alexander Yuzhin and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, he worked in several theatres. The XXI International Debut Film Festival “Spirit of Fire” presents its out-of-competition programs. The featured films are a hundred years apart – the earliest one was made in 1913, and most of the other films were released recently and are not yet familiar to the public. The regional television and radio company “Yugra” and the State National Film Company of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), “Sakhafilm”, signed a cooperation agreement aimed at developing the film industry. The agreement was signed in the presence of the Yugra Governor Natalya Komarova during the Spirit of Fire film festival. Russia’s oldest film studio Lenfilm will aid development of ethnic cinema produced in Yugra. The Governor Natalia Komarova and the studio’s General Director Fyodor Scherbakov signed a supplementary agreement and approved a plan of actions for development of film and television content production. The signing ceremony took place at the Spirit of Fire Film Festival. “We are starting to work together with the district on popularizing ethnic cinema. There will be screenings at “Lenfilm” in St. Petersburg. We will organize discussions and invite film scholars and experts. That’s fascinating. Small towns and villages in Yugra will see more active development of culture, art, and education. This is the goal of the agreements signed by the district government, the Timchenko Foundation, and the Yugra Center for Civil and Social Initiatives Foundation. The XXI International Debut Film Festival “The Spirit of Fire” closed in Khanty-Mansiysk today. The first award presented on stage of the Big Hall of Yugra-Classic Concert Center went to the winner of the International competition program of children and teenager films “Your Cinema”. This program is almost as old as the festival itself, for many years it existed as a club of children and teenager films inside “The Spirit of Fire” program. Now, as a competition program, it showcases international and Russian premieres of films from all over the world, made for audiences between the ages of 6 and 16.  The program curator Ekaterina Bordacheva and her Chilean colleague, the creative director of the Eye of the Fish Children Film Festival, Alejandra Fritis, came on stage to present the award. The Spirit of Fire is not just about films. Every year, the festival hosts a variety of cultural events: performances of famous Russian and international musicians, concerts, art exhibitions and many more.  Renowned filmmakers, who come to the festival as members of the jury or guests, conduct workshops. The Spirit of Fire considers it one of its most important goals to contribute to the cultural development of the residents of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District – Yugra, participants and audience of the festival. 

Every year, the Spirit of Fire out-of-competition themed and retrospective screenings feature the most interesting new releases and little known but time honoured classics from various countries.   The “Small-Numbered Peoples” program includes four films, some already acclaimed at other festivals, and some that are yet unknown to the audience. Russian viewers will get to see six special screenings of films from Russia and Kazakhstan. The retrospective program this year features Pyotr Chardynin.

“Your Movie” is almost as old as the Spirit of Fire. It started as the festival’s film club for children and teenagers in the early 2000s and has grown into a full-fledged international competition program.  This program includes international and Russian premieres of films from all over the world for audiences from 6 to 16 years old. For children and teenagers of Khanty-Mansiysk it has become a real window on the world, an opportunity to see films that are not (yet) available in Russian cinema theatres and to learn about lives of their peers from different countries. This year, six films from China, India, Iran, Bolivia, and co-productions from Chile and Brazil, and France and Luxembourg participate in the competition.

The super short film competition has been an annual event at the festival for several years now.  Entry requirements are kept to a minimum: the film should be no longer than three minutes and correspond to the festival current theme – “Indigenous Peoples of the World”. Films of any genre are accepted. Adult filmmakers submitted narrative films, music videos, documentaries and social cause advertisements for competition. The younger generation mastered such formats as fairy tales, animation films and social advertisements.   More than 40 films from Russia and Kazakhstan have been submitted for the competition. The best of them have been selected to take part in the finals. They will be posted on the Spirit of Fire International Debut Film Festival’s Vkontakte page https://vk.com/ugrafest2023. We are happy to introduce a short film competition program at the International Debut Film Festival “Spirit of Fire”.  The competition is open to directors whose works are their first or second feature film, under 20 minutes long. The jury composed of film scholars and and film critics selects the winners. There is a separate set of awards in this category: the Golden Taiga – Short Film and the Silver Taiga – Short Film.

For a long time, the Russian debut program developed on the sidelines of the Spirit of Fire main event, the international competition.  Year after year, we saw how the festival audience grew more and more interested in the Russian cinema and first films of promising young directors. So it was natural to establish a Russian debut competition in its own right. It presents no fewer than six feature films, each one a director’s first work. In 2023 the Russian competition included six films.

This program is the Spirit of Fire main competition. It presents no fewer than six feature-length films (including at least one Russian film) each year.  According to the competition regulations, the films must be the director’s first or second narrative feature-length works. Films in competition should have not previously been screened in Russia. In 2023, seven films from Russia, Argentina, China, France, India, Iran, and Japan participated in the international competition. Some of the films have been internationally acclaimed.

Artists born by the North” will be held at the “Yugra-Classic” concert centre during the festival “The Spirit of Fire”. The exhibition is part of the audio-visual project “The Soul of Russia. The jury member, producer Anastasia Razlogova and the jury president, the famous film and theatre actor and TV presenter Leonid Kanevsky conferred awards in the competition program “Debut – Short Film”.  As Anastasia Razlogova pointed out, making a film is very difficult, but it is seldom that a film gets an award. It is important, though, with all the effort it takes, not to stop and to keep making films. A special diploma of the jury was awarded to “When Starlight Passes by”, directed by Denis Bazovoy.  The Little Silver Taiga for a Short Film went to “The Pack,” directed by Arthur Grigoriev.  As Leonid Kanevsky mentioned, the hardest part of the jury’s work was take a decision. But, however difficult the decision was, it was taken. As a result, the Little Golden Taiga for a Short Film was awarded to “Cu-Ckoo”, directed by Evgeny Nikolayev.

At the end of the Spirit of Fire festive closing ceremony Maria Zvereva, the Vice-President of the Festival, came on stage. She noted that the Festival’s President Emir Kusturica should have been standing on stage with her, but he had a misfortune to break his leg and needed a serious surgery. Yet, the Festival has its President’s Prize. Maria Zvereva asked the international jury president Bauddhayan Mukherji to award the prize. The Sergei Solovyov Golden Taiga Award for the best Russian debut film went to “The Cage is Looking for a Bird”, a debut film by Malika Musayeva. The jury president of the Russian Debut Films Competition, director Alexey Mizgirev presented the Award. On stage during the Festival closing ceremony, he said that it was always hard to start filming, but if you were led by an experience you had lived through, something that ate you, hurt you, some gnawing truth, or something you adored, then it got a bit easier. You meet a director who becomes your teacher, and producers, too, and finally your debut film gets an award. This was the story of Malika Musayeva. The main event of the XXI International Debut Film Festival “Spirit of Fire” took place, as it should, by the end of the closing ceremony. All members of the international jury came on stage to present the awards of the main – i.e. international – competition. According to Bauddhayan Mukherji, an Indian director, producer and founder of Little Lamb Films, his colleagues and he watched seven films that made them “cry, laugh and wonder how the characters’ fates ended up in the films of first-time directors”.  One of the awards went to a film about profound loneliness that reveals the protagonist’s inner experiences. The Bronze Taiga for a debut film was awarded to “Far Away Eyes”, directed by Wang Chun-Hong, Taiwan (China).
